Resurgent Daniil Medvedev Claims Maiden Championship in Nearly 30 Months

Nineteen of the Russian's twenty-one championships have been won on hard surfaces

A comeback Daniil Medvedev won his first title for nearly 30 months with victory over opponent Moutet in the Almaty Open final.

The athlete, a former world number one, has endured a torrid season, winning just one win at the Grand Slams and experiencing a meltdown at the US Open.

Medvedev's varied form on the professional circuit - and issues with his serving in particular - resulted in him dropping out of the world's top 10 and eventually parting ways with former trainer Cervara.

Presently training with Thomas Johansson and his other coach, he has consistently progressed in the recent weeks - peaking in a hard-fought 7-5 4-6 6-3 triumph over Frenchman Corentin Moutet.

It is the player's initial trophy following the Rome competition and first on a hard court after that period of that year.

Success also indicates he has achieved twenty-one titles at 21 various competitions.

"This marks the first occasion I am participating in a competition with my children together, so to secure a trophy is particularly special," commented world number 14 Medvedev.

"This title is in dedication of my younger daughter Victoria, because the first title I got when my child Alisa was delivered was for her."

The athlete, the past champion, had lost his last six finals, including in that event in the past months.

His counter-punching play style and frequent reactions on court had prompted some to wonder if his capacity to perform at the elite level was concluded.

But the player has made changes in the past month, making an effort to approach the net and compete positively, backed up by an enhanced service.

Medvedev recovered from a deficit in the first set against the tricky opponent, securing four of the concluding five exchanges to go ahead.

The pair exchanged service breaks in the second set before the Frenchman, striving for his maiden professional title, seized the initiative to create a decider.

He rescued 4 initial opportunities in a competitive third set before the champion secured a break to that score to serve for the match.

Appropriately, he clinched the win with a point at the net area, with his opponent failing to manage a return after two hours and 38 minutes.
